| MacBook Air: Apple drops a dud. |
[Jan. 15th, 2008|10:36 pm] |

Yes, it's thin, but useful?
1.6ghz processor? My year old MacBook has a 2ghz 13" screen? So? MacBook has 13.5 so this is hardly the replacement for the much missed 12" Powerbook 4200rpm PATA harddrive? Basically an iPod harddrive, right? And much much slower than the drive in even the first generation of MacBooks No optical drive? No Mic line? Only one USB port? This thing is not going to be used by musicians. Oh, and the battery is sealed in and not user serviceable.
Price?
An eye watering £1,199. Or if you want to make it useful by going for a solid state flash 64gb HD, a wallet murdering £2,028.
Underspec'd, over priced, gimmicky.
Apple should have looked to the Eeepc and delivered a subnotebook that could compete with that, picture a 7" machine, running a cut down and optimised for portable devices version of OSX with easily upgradable HD storage (just slip it in the SD slot), wireless, and less than £250.....actually, you don't need to think too hard, cos here it is -

With a bit of bravery and following a few online guides, the Asus Eeepc can be made to run OSX (though why anyone would want to put it on there when the preinstalled version of Linux does everything you need quickly and elegantly is a mystery, especially as OSX runs at half speed on the low spec'd Eeepc). It may not work well, but it is a convincing proof of concept.
Imagine if Apple had introduced a machine the size of the Asus, running that simplified version of OSX (OSX Air anyone?) and retailing at £300. Apparently the Asus is flying off the shelves (I'll be getting myself one as soon as I'm back in gainful employment), just think of the market Apple could have tapped into.
Instead they've dropped an underpowered, over priced turkey. |

| Sparrows and More Sparrows....OUT SOON! :) |
[Jan. 10th, 2008|02:21 pm] |
So here's the plan -
'Sparrows and More Sparrows', the fourth (or 14th, depending on how you count it) Thee Moths album will be out in March. It's going to be available via all the usual download places as well as in a very limited form from Banazan (with some extra bits)
It's been almost a year since I finished it, and I'm starting to get the 'itch' again. After doing the Wülfstabber stuff I've learned a lot about programming basslines and synth parts, as well as getting better at drum patterns, so don't be surprised if the next Thee Moths record features no guitars at all.
At the moment I'm thinking that I'll write a pile of backing tracks for Catface then get on with the new record around the beginning of the summer. |

[Dec. 31st, 2007|04:53 pm] |
Yes, here it is, my list of who is going to be scorching our ears with their red hot sounds in 2008 Gunner Ear - trash/thrash sick-fucks straight outta Cumbernauld. Their debut 'Cypher Lift' demo was an experience, an experience akin to being buried by a tonne of bricks all signed by members of Dirty Wee Middens. Will blow your eyes out with their stage show. Gnome Rider - heavier than heavy, heavier even than the centre of a star - yes, that fuckin' heavy. All the way from Forfar and ready to rape your daughters with their speedprog riffs, throat rippage, and songs set exclusively in a modern day 'reimagining' of Tolkien's Middle Earth! Fearsome! The Murderers - some say they were born in Templeton Woods, the result of the 'Serotonin Incident'. Others (their mum's mainly) say they are from Menzies Hill. Whatever the truth is, they are the band that even Satan is unable to listen to without having to call for his mummy to come and hold his hand. Demo CDR 'We're The Murderers, Cos We Are (Murderers That Is)' is out on January the 4th on their own Painful Death imprint. SuperJengaWare - Nils Hoffman is the one man wonder behind SuperJengaWare. Marrying the digital scrunch of 4bit ZX Spectrum sounds to the air punching drama of Old Skool Rave, SuperJengaWare is guaranteed to get you dancing. Debut CD '////' is available now from AudioPunch Records of Austria Tucker's Luck - four piece indie-rock from Barnstable in the classic Cast/Oasis mould. For lovers of classic tunes, classic riffs and classic trousers. Tucker's Luck bring the true meaning of indie-rock back home. Second single 'Standing On A Morning Glory (Ya Know What I Mean)' has been played heavily on XFM and MTV2 - prepare to fall in love with these bad boys. Gloria Ir'ray - with Amy Winehouse headed for an early grave her mantle seems set to be taken on by this smouldering chanteuse from Southend. The looks of a goddess and the voice of a 90 year old bluesman make her sure to be one of the big sellers of 2008. The Mung Bean Jesus - discovered busking with a cardboard box by Alan McGee, The Mung Bean Jesus has been playing his freak-folk mantras to wowed festival crowds all through the summer. His debut album 'St. Albion and The Dargons' is set to be THE must own of the next twelve months. Airhorns - All the way from the Isle of Man, Airhorns are the rude awakening that Nu-Rave needed. Taking their cues from such trailblazers as Jesus Jones, EMF and the Utah Saints, Airhorns are a dayglo explosion of pop, rock and smiley faced rave action. Nothing released yet, but their live shows are incredible. |

| Should I turn up? |
[Oct. 15th, 2007|12:19 am] |
According to Last FM I'm playing in Sweden on the 9th of November, at a venue called 'Debaser' - http://www.last.fm/event/374487
Needless to say, this is the first I've heard of it.
A little more digging has revealed that the venue maybe has me mixed up with The Moths, a band from London who don't seem to give a crap that someone else has been using the name for a lot longer than them, and who sound like The Cure (but shitter).
Hilariously the venue has the correct name on their page....but illustrates it with a picture of me.

This page thinks it's me that's playing (as does this one), translating a lot of my biog into Swedish! And this page repeats the error!
Under the corroboration rules on Wikipedia, this gig would be classed as really happening. |

| Suggestions? |
[Nov. 30th, 2006|05:20 pm] |
I'll soon be playing a show with Thomas Moronic (in his Snow Choir guise) where he'll be playing guitar and I'll be sampling and manipulating on the fly.
What I need is some simple software to do this on my (coming soon, like, tomorrow or later today) Macbook. I've ordered the 2GHz version with the 1gb of ram so specs aren't really an issue!
Anyone have a suggestion? I just want to be able to take a line level from a mixer, bugger about with it a bit and then dump it back into the mix. Something with buffers so I don't end up with loads of audio clogging up my HD would be great.
Over to you. |

So, if you've got a shirt from me wash it with care! The one I am keeping has been washed and is ok but I'm going to iron (through a cloth) all the others just to make sure. |
